Notes on the Evening
A short guide to dressing after dark, without the costume department.

Evening dressing has become strangely literal: the sequin, the slit, the strap. We prefer a different set of signals — a heavier fabric, a longer line, a hem that moves. Nothing that requires an announcement.
Start with weight
Satin, velvet, and a dense crepe all read as evening because they catch light differently rather than because they sparkle. A black satin slip in a heavy grade is more persuasive in a dark room than any amount of embellishment.
Then line
A bias cut is the most efficient luxury in the wardrobe: it follows the body without gripping it, and it makes the simplest dress look expensive. If you buy one evening piece this year, make it that one.
The best evening clothes look slightly bored. They have been to better parties than this one.
Finally, edit
One strong element is enough. If the dress is bare at the shoulder, keep the jewellery quiet. If the fabric is loud, keep the silhouette strict. If both are quiet, add nothing at all — that is the point.
The evening edit collects fourteen pieces chosen on this logic, from a column dress in ink satin to a velvet jacket that works over everything in the collection.
